What should you do first if you’ve just been scammed?
- Call 1930 right away. This is the national cyber crime helpline. The faster you report, the better the chance of freezing the money.
- Report online too at the national cyber crime reporting portal, and keep the acknowledgement number.
- Tell your bank and ask them to block your card or UPI if needed.
- Save everything: screenshots, transaction IDs, phone numbers, chat history. Don’t delete the chats.

Which five rules stop most scams?
- Never share an OTP, not even with someone who says they’re from your bank.
- You never need a PIN to receive money. If a UPI request asks for your PIN, it’s taking money out.
- No real job asks you to pay first. “Pay ₹500 registration to start earning” is always a trap.
- Doubled money in a day isn’t investing. It’s the start of a scam.
- Pause on urgent calls. Scammers rush you on purpose. Hang up, then call the person or bank back on a number you already know.
How can you protect your parents and older relatives from scams?
Older family members are targeted the most, often with fake calls about electricity bills, KYC updates or a relative “in trouble”. Sit with them once and set a family rule: no money moves after a phone call until they’ve called you first.
A neighbour of mine got a call that sounded exactly like her son asking for money. Because they had that rule, she called her son back. He was at work and had no idea. AI can now copy voices, so a family code word is worth setting up too.

Can I get my money back after a scam?
Sometimes, if you report quickly and the money is still in the scammer’s account. Reporting fast is the single most useful thing you can do.
