Loans and Credit Cards Guides for Indians

Credit cards, loans and credit score, without the traps.

What should you ask before taking any loan or credit card?

  1. Do I really need it now? Many loans start as “it’s only a small EMI”. Small EMIs add up fast.
  2. What is the total cost? Look past the interest rate. Processing fees, insurance added to the loan and prepayment charges all count. Our post on EMI vs total interest shows how a lower EMI can cost you more.
  3. Can I still pay if my income stops for three months? If not, the loan is too big for now.
  4. What does this do to my CIBIL score? Every application and every late payment shows up. Read how to improve your CIBIL score before you apply.

Which credit card habit matters the most?

Pay the full bill, every month, by the due date. That’s it. If you do only this, a credit card is a useful tool. If you pay only the minimum due, it becomes one of the most expensive loans you can take.

My cousin learned this the slow way. She paid the minimum for a few months after a big phone purchase and was shocked when the interest showed up on her statement. She now has autopay set to the full amount, and she says it’s the best setting she ever changed.

How do you spot a loan you should avoid?

  • An app asks for access to your contacts, photos or messages.
  • Someone asks for a “processing fee” before the loan is approved.
  • The lender isn’t a bank or an RBI-registered company, or won’t tell you its name.
  • You’re pushed to decide in minutes.

Any one of these is enough to say no. Real lenders give you time to read the terms.

What do people often ask about loans and credit cards?

Does checking my own CIBIL score lower it?

No. Checking your own score is a soft check. Applications for loans and cards are the hard checks that count.

Should I become a guarantor for a friend’s loan?

Only if you could repay the whole loan yourself. Read the risks of being a loan guarantor first.
