Where do you start if your salary disappears every month?
Most people don’t have a saving problem. They have a “where did it go?” problem. So the first step isn’t cutting things. It’s seeing where the money actually goes.
- Track one month. Just write down every spend for 30 days. Our simple budget guide shows an easy way to do it.
- Let AI do the boring part. You can paste your spends (without account numbers) into a free AI tool and ask it to group them. See how to plan your budget with AI.
- Fix the leaks. Pick two or three changes, not twenty. The 15 ways to save money every month list is a good place to choose from.
- Build the cushion. Then move the saved amount into an emergency fund before you think about investing.

Why should you save first and spend later?
Here’s the habit that helped me more than any budget app. On salary day, move your saving amount out first, before rent, before shopping, before anything. Whatever is left is what you can spend.
It feels tight for the first two months. Then you stop noticing it. Even ₹1,000 a month moved on day one grows into ₹12,000 by the end of the year, plus whatever interest it earns.
A friend of mine set up an auto-transfer of ₹2,000 to a separate account on the 2nd of every month. She told me later that she never “missed” the money, because she never saw it sitting in her main account.
What do people often ask about saving money?
Is saving in a savings account enough?
For your emergency fund, yes. For goals more than five years away, savings account interest usually doesn’t beat rising prices, so you’ll want to invest a part of it.
How much should I save?
There’s no fixed number. Start with 10% of your take-home pay if you can, and raise it a little each time your salary goes up.
